Movable Type Re-installation
December 29th, 2004 . by Alexander FisherI changed my domain host from Hostway to 1and1 and it took me awhile to get the paths configured on my blog. I had to re-learn what I knew about Movable Type. I am glad I took good notes the first time. It always seems to be about paths. Because of the technical nature of paths to data files on a web server, most domain hosts don’t really seem to be able to put all of the information together on one page and not make me search all over for it.
I was able to just copy my old files to my new web provider’s site and set the permissions on the Perl scripts. I didn’t even bother (yet) to FTP the image files in binary. I jost uploaded them in ASCII. They seem to be OK, so far.
I had tried this before, about a week ago and failed. I decided to just get a new copy of the software and try to create a new blog. When I suceeded, I knew that I could make my original blog files operational. I wasn’t sure if it was possible. I am going to upgrade to the new v3 of Movable Type. Now that I have a working install, I can upgrade without much concern.
My Plug-ins seem to be working as well. I am using htmlArea right now that I installed one year ago.
I hate not having something working, but I always get a rush when I realize I succeeded at resolving a failure that required equal amounts of resolve, determination, and skill.
Enhances my self esteem.
I spoke too soon. I had lost all commenting function and all of the original comments would get erased as I rebuilt the site. I am going to try to bring everything back, but it might take me a few days. I have a complete export without comments. I will test the format and add back any comments. The worst part is that it didn’t have to be this way. Had I exported before I changed domain providers I wouldn’t have to do this.
