Why does WLW-700 hate me?

October 17th, 2008 . by Alexander Fisher

I remember on Sept 11, 2001, I was working all day in Cincinnati, Ohio. I lived in Toledo at the time, but I still loved to listen any time I could to WLW, which I could get most of the time even in Michigan. I was glued to WLW all day that day as was usual for me anyway. On Sept. 11, we were all patriots and had a common cause.

Comedian Gary Burbank was the main reason I listened, and I even had a lot of respect for host Mike McConnell. I loved the Reds and had been listening to them on 700 since the late sixties. I grew up listening to Ruth Lyons 50-50 Club with my mother every afternoon.

After that date, the tone of WLW’s take on politics and life in general was clearly neo-conservative. I found myself being offended personally almost every time I listened to WLW and felt that at any moment I was in danger of being attacked verbally had I admitted to being someting other than a Republican. Moderates and Liberals were attacked relentlessly by WLW hosts as being un-American. I wondered what they would have said about me had I called in and told them I was an evolutionist as well.

I have not listened to WLW since about 2002. I think about all the good times I had listening to 700 every time I hear the hate filled rants of Bill Cunningham played on other broadcasts. I am sure he is very popular with his listeners, but as far as furthering an intelligent debate, not so much.

What I never understood was why my money was never green enough for them or their advertizers. Obviously it wasn’t or their programming would not have gone so right wing. I am not sure how they serve the entire community with such angry hosts with such right wing un-American agendas.

I hope that someday that I feel comfortable listening to WLW again. I am not holding my breath.
